Discover the magic of cities, the tranquility of the countryside and the rich Japanese culture on a unique adventure.
Japan, where tradition meets modernity, offers a unique and deeply enriching cultural experience. From Tokyo to Hiroshima, each location presents a valuable and distinct perspective, creating a rich cultural tapestry that delights any visitor.
Some time ago, I had the opportunity to visit this wonderful place, which I now consider the best trip I’ve ever taken. Japanese culture is profoundly different from the West, standing out for the exemplary education of the Japanese, who enchant us with their kindness.
Furthermore, cleanliness is an aspect that I cannot stress enough: everything is extremely clean and organized, truly a dream.
Preparing for Your Trip to Japan
Since September 2023, Brazil and Japan have signed the reciprocal visa exemption. Therefore, tourists traveling to Japan no longer need to obtain a Japanese visa.
Considering that each season in Japan presents its own beauties and events, spring and autumn are highly recommended for their mild temperatures and colorful landscapes, ideal for photography.
Particularly, I recommend visiting in spring, from the end of March to the beginning of April, when the beauty of the temples with the cherry blossom trees make the trip worth it. The streets, parks and temples are stunning, creating images that seem like something out of a dream.
Transport
Wherever you go, transportation is incredibly efficient; bus and train schedules are extremely punctual. At the time I visited, it was very advantageous to buy the JRPass, as I traveled to several cities and used the shinkansen several times. However, with the recent increase in fees, it is crucial to carefully analyze and calculate the cost of one-off fees to determine if it is really worth it. If you decide it is worth it, contact the tourism agency T2 Travel and Tourism and get yours.
Urban Exploration: Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan’s pulsating metropolis, is a treasure trove of contrasts. From the hustle and bustle of the crowds in Shibuya to the tranquility of the Imperial Palace gardens, the city offers a taste of it all. Explore the countless shops and restaurants or take a moment to relax in one of the many themed cafes spread across the city.
Tokyo is incredible and also has parks that we can explore, there is the Technology Museum, among other attractions.
Tokyo pharmacies sell incredible cosmetics, of course it’s not that cheap because at the time of conversion everything becomes expensive, but it’s worth looking for Bioré products, from powerful makeup removers to sunscreens.
Cultural Immersion: Kyoto and Nara
Kyoto serves as the cultural heart of Japan, home to more than a thousand temples, such as the famous Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion. Walk the historic streets of Gion, perhaps crossing paths with a geisha on your way to a performance. Nearby, Nara offers a more serene experience with its vast parks and ancient temples, where friendly deer approach visitors in search of snacks.
The Path of Peace: Hiroshima and Miyajima
Visiting Hiroshima is touching on a dark past, but also witnessing the incredible resilience and commitment to peace. The Peace Memorial Park and the Hiroshima Museum are essential visits to understand the depth of the city’s history. A short trip takes you to the island of Miyajima, where Itsukushima Shrine’s famous torii gate creates an unforgettable image as it rises majestically from the waters.
Hiroshima for me was the most impactful destination I’ve been to to date, you can feel the energy of the place, the suffering of those people who have already been there, if you have the opportunity do it guided tour to know the story in detail.
Natural Retreat: Hakone
Hakone is known for its spectacular views of Mount Fuji and its revitalizing hot springs. Enjoy a stroll around Lake Ashi or enjoy a relaxing experience at one of the many onsen ryokans. Hakone also offers hiking trails that allow visitors to connect with nature and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
Where to stay
The variety of accommodation in Japan ranges from modern luxury hotels in Tokyo to charming ryokans in Kyoto and Hakone. These ryokans provide an authentic experience, allowing guests to live like traditional Japanese people, with futons on tatami mats and baths in hot springs.
The cultural experience of staying at Ryokans in Kyoto or Hakone is worth it.
My experiences with accommodation were great, I’m going to tell you about the hotels I chose and they all worked out well.
In Japan the hotels are smaller, but they are still very clean and comfortable.
Everyone I stayed in had a bathrobe and slippers, Japan has always had this issue of not wearing shoes inside the house and even in hotels, it’s really a hygiene issue that in Brazil we acquired this habit post-pandemic.
In Tokyo I stayed in two hotels, as I arrived through Tokyo and returned via Tokyo. I stayed in the Shinjuku neighborhood upon arrival, but I don’t recommend it, as I found the area very busy, club-style and with many massage parlors. I prefer a quieter place, but if you like the hustle and bustle, stay there.
Hotel Gracery Shinjuku – daily rate for 2 adults – US$266.00
On my return to Tokyo I stayed in the Shinjuku neighborhood, but closer to Shibuya the area was much quieter.
Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku – daily rate for 2 adults – US$227.00
In Kyoto I stayed in a small hotel, but very well located, I would stay again, very close to the Kyoto train station and several restaurant options inside.
APA Hotel Kyoto Eki Higashi – daily rate for 2 adults US$172.00
In Hiroshima, the hotel chosen was also very close to the station and as simple as the one in Kyoto, even because they are from the same hotel chain.
APA Hiroshima – Ekimae Ohashi – daily rate US$91.00
I left to talk about the most Japanese hotel I stayed at last and I opted for Ryokan, this hotel included a completely typical Japanese breakfast and dinner, as well as having hot spring baths inside, it was truly an incredible experience. This was the hotel in Hakone, I highly recommend it. We got there by taxi, there is no train station nearby.
Hotel Green Plaza Hakone – daily rate in Japanese style room – US$ 249.00

Cultural Tips: Etiquette and Traditions
Etiquette in Japan is vital, especially in public places. In temples, it is essential to maintain seriousness and respect, while in onsens, hygiene rules must be observed before entering the waters. Remember that you must take off your shoes to enter the temples. Respecting these traditions not only enriches your experience, but also helps you maintain a good relationship with the locals.
